Wonders shall never cease: Couple divorce shortly after marriage
A husband divorced his wife hours after their wedding because she was too busy texting her friends to consummate the marriage.
The groom took his Saudi bride back to their hotel room after the ceremony in the city of Jeddah.
But when he tried to get intimate with her, he was pushed away by his wife because she was trying to respond to congratulatory messages from friends on her phone.
She became angry when he asked her to stop.
A relative told Saudi daily Al Watan: ‘The groom tried to get closer with her and more intimate, but he was shocked when she ignored him, not responding to his words and action.
“When he asked her if her friends were more important than he was, the bride answered that they were.”
The argument became heated and the groom stormed out of the hotel, telling his wife that he wanted a divorce.
Gulf News, which cited Al Watan, reported that a court had referred the case to a reconciliation committee, but the husband insisted on a divorce.
According to a Saudi legal expert, around 50 per cent of divorces involved newlyweds.
Ahmad Al Maabi said: “Misunderstandings, differences in views and the easy approach to marriage without a deep appreciation of the responsibilities are among the major causes for divorce among young people.
“Marriages are bound to fail when there are no robust foundations or trust.”

Ongoing Strike: Tinubu begs NLC to shelve strike
The National leader of the APC, Asiwaju Ahmed Bola Tinubu paid visit to Labour house yesterday with a high powered delegation including the Governor of Osun State, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola.
“I am here to appeal to you to understand that whatever you are doing now and whatever this government, led by Buhari is doing is for the development of all Nigerians.
“I have come to appeal to you to suspend the action you have embarked upon and return to the negotiating table,” he said.
He added: “I came to appeal to you to go back to history that we worked very hard to bring Nigeria to progressive path. Tinubu, who attributed misunderstanding between government and the people to dearth of teaching of history in schools, tasked senators to urgently initiate bill on compulsory teaching of the subject.
NLC factional president,Ayuba Wabba in his response said he had heard the Tinubu-led delegation’s message. He assured that he would convey it appropriately to the union’s various organs.
But he berated the government over what he described as engagement in negotiations with both factions of the union, with a view to having divide and rule.
Even as he said his union was open to resume negotiation with the government,Wabba vowed to press ahead with the strike.

Shooting recorded near the presidential residence in the United States led to a lockdown on Friday.
US Park Police tweeted that the shooting occurred after 2 pm on West Executive Drive, near 17th and Pennsylvania Avenue NW.
President Barack Obama was said to be away at the time of the incident. The White House press pool said the president was golfing at Joint Base Andrews.
However, Vice-President Joe Biden was taken to a safe location, according to the police.
ABC News quoted sources as saying one person was shot by law enforcement officers near the White House.
Snipers took to the White House roof with guns drawn as people were cleared off the streets. Some people were heard screaming on Pennsylvania Avenue, Washington Post said in a report.
A Capitol Police spokesman said the agency is monitoring the situation at the White House, but that all buildings remain open at the Capitol.
Trabian Shorters, the head of the advocacy group whose members were waiting in line to enter the Executive Office Building, said one of his companions heard shots, and officials quickly cleared the area.
“They started yelling for everyone to clear the canopy and get to the street,” Shorters was quoted to have said. “They were very emphatic. It was clearly very serious.”
Commenting on the incident, Muriel Bowser, mayor of DC, tweeted: “We are aware of the White House lockdown situation. I’ve been briefed by my public safety team [and] they are coordinating w federal partners.”
